The next day, Peggy sat across from her two friends, studying the restaurant's menu and having a hard time deciding which entree to order. Finally, she told the waitress to bring her favorite meal--chicken-fried steak, mashed potatoes with cream gravy, and a large Coke. A look passed between June and Kiki, but they said nothing, other than to ask for grilled tilapia with steamed veggies and iced tea. Peggy sighed, wishing she had their willpower, wondering if she could change her order, but the waitress had already taken their menus and left.
Kiki took a sip of water and smiled at the others before speaking. "So, how goes the great search? What's the latest?"
"Search? Wa...wait a minute," Peggy stammered. "Are you talking about your wild idea to find our old boyfriends? I thought that was just a joke. June, you're not searching for Denny, are you?"
June's cheeks reddened.

I am so there with these women! Can't wait to read the book, which I bought just a day or so ago. This is going to be fun!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Shelley. I hope you have as much fun reading I.O.U. SEX as we had writing it.
DeleteLove it - I've so often felt that way ordering my food at a restaurant...well done, excellent excerpt!
ReplyDeleteI often want what the other person ordered. If I'm lucky, they'll offer me a taste.
DeleteOh man, that made me hungry for chicken friend steak - haven't had one since I left Texas.
ReplyDeleteWe're both native Texans and enjoy chicken fried steak too. That's why we included it in the book.
DeleteGreat setup. Nicely done!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Michael.
DeleteNow my mouth is watering.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to Texas soon, and chicken-fried steak is one thing I'm definitely going to eat. And plenty of barbeque and Tex-Mex too.
DeleteI wonder how June's search for Denny is coming along. *blush*
ReplyDeleteWe didn't want to include a spoiler!
DeletePeggy was such an interesting character, low self-esteem and yet in the end... well, I won't spoil it for anyone else. Great excerpt. It says a lot about the characters just by what they order for lunch.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by, Lynn. I'm enjoying Boomer Lit Friday a lot!
DeleteI certainly can relate to Peggy about willpower when it comes to selecting from a menu. I've said it before and I'll say it again, "I.O.U. Sex" was one of my favorite reads of 2012. I loved it!
ReplyDeleteBefore I get to the restaurant, I tell myself, "I'm going to have a salad." But then I read the descriptions and ... all is lost!
DeleteThanks for your kind words about I.O.U. SEX and your continued support.
Great excerpt! I loved this book! Still talking about it! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by, Jacquie. Your comments and support are sincerely appreciated.
DeleteIt took courage to put a picture of a chicken fried steak in your presentation. I think I'll have to read this one.
ReplyDeletej
LOL. I wish I could have found one served properly -- with the cream gravy slathered all over the top of the steak and mashed potatoes. But at least this gives a general idea of what chicken fried steak looks like.
DeleteThat picture is hilarious. And the way you build your characters makes me think she ate the whole thing! Great excerpt!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you enjoyed the post. To make chicken fried steak, the first thing you do is pound the hell out of a less tender cut of beef until it's not very thick. Then you coat it like you would chicken and start frying. The cream gravy is a roux made from the leavings in the frying pan (with cream added). So even though the steak hangs over the edges of the plate, it isn't very thick. And yes, I'm sure Peggy ate the whole thing.
DeleteSANDY YES YOU DO.....the first thing is pound the hell out of that meat. lot of people dont understand that. but it has to happen.
DeleteDear Sandy, I remember this part of the book which I found amusing. And it begins the antics of these women in their desire to pay their debts lol. BTW, I don't care how you make it, chiken fried steak is nasty and I was born in the south and spent mostof my childhood summers there. The only thing worse is canned okra (shivering).
ReplyDeleteMicki
To each her own! That's why menus are full of choices. Although I disagree with you about the chicken fried steak, I have to say canned okra is icky, though I do like okra fried. Heck, I'm Southern so I like everything fried!
DeleteThanks for stopping by and taking the time to leave a comment.
I get such a kick out of your excerpts and this is no exception. So very real - so very female! How much of how we define ourselves has to do with our diet and what we order at a restaurant?! Great snippet from your book and I very much look forward to reading more!
