I've just started reading this memoir by Marsha Roberts, and so far I'm enjoying it a lot. She has a great sense of humor, and her recollections are like something you'd read in a letter from a friend. Look at the face in that photo. Doesn't Marsha look like a rascal? Each chapter contains an inspirational message at the end.
Today's excerpt is from the book's introduction. (I fudged and included three sentences, just this once.)
TEASER:
You know how when your jeans start getting tight, you tell yourself you had the dryer set too hot and they shrunk? Deep down you know you're gaining weight, but you just can't bring yourself to admit it.
That's how I was dealing with what was going on in the lives of me and my family.

My Book Beginnings and Friday 56 excerpts today are from AND THE WHIPPOORWILL SANG, a true story of a family whose teenage daughter was killed by a drunk driver. The author says, "It's a funny, poignant celebration of her life more than a eulogy of her death."
BOOK BEGINNING:
August 23, 1981
The doctors stride into the emergency waiting room, nodding curtly to neighbors and friends, indicating that they want them to leave. The door swishes shut, entombing me with these harbingers of death, who sit in a semi-circle about ten feet from me - as if getting too close might somehow contaminate them. They introduce themselves, one by one, but their names wash over me unheard. It is the looks on their faces that I will always remember.
FRIDAY 56:
The doctor insisted that I remove all the baby's clothes and he would return shortly, a word that apparently means different things to different people. The doctor disappeared, doing whatever it is that doctors do while patients wait in small rooms devoid of their dignity.

MY THOUGHTS:
Beginning with Micki's marriage, this is the story of her family, with all the joys and challenges that being a family entails. It is told with humor and feeling. Although this touching story is sobering and could have been depressing, the family's love shines through the pages instead and it is joyous.

My two sentences today are from And The Whippoorwill Sang, a true story of a family whose teenage daughter was killed by a drunk driver. The majority of the book is the family's history, beginning with the parents' marriage. Although this touching story is sobering and could have been depressing, instead the family's love shines through the pages.
When I reach the cubicle in the emergency room and pull back the gray curtain, I lose all remaining sense of reality. This cannot be the child who had run out my front door only an hour ago, too excited to give me a kiss goodbye, calling out, "Bye, Mom."
